Musical de álbum de Alanis Morissette lidera o Tony Awards com 15 indicações

Por razões óbvias, foi uma temporada estranha e curta da Broadway. Ainda assim, o 74º Tony Awards anual está avançando, celebrando o trabalho das produções que foram capazes de fazer shows antes do fechamento em março do distrito teatral de Nova York. Isso inclui Jagged Little Pill, o musical baseado no álbum icônico de Alanis Morissette de mesmo nome, que lidera o 2020 Tonys com 15 indicações.

Para ser justo, houve um campo consideravelmente menor este ano do que o normal. Como a pandemia forçou o fechamento da Broadway, a data limite para as produções elegíveis ao Tony foi adiada para 19 de fevereiro de 2020. (Jagged Little Pill estreou oficialmente na Broadway em dezembro do ano passado). Isso significa que apenas 18 peças foram elegíveis para indicações, para baixo de 34 em 2019. Também há uma categoria a menos este ano em 25, e muitos apresentam muito menos indicados; na verdade, Melhor Performance para um Ator em um Papel Principal em um Musical tem apenas um indicado – e, portanto, o vencedor instantâneo – Aaron Tveit para o Moulin Rouge! O musical.

Não que nada disso deva diminuir as realizações de Jagged Little Pill. A produção é incrivelmente poderosa, com performances estelares e um cenário incrivelmente criativo. É por isso que está concorrendo a Melhor Musical, Melhor Design Cênico e uma série de prêmios de Melhor Performance. Elizabeth Stanley foi indicada para Melhor Performance de Atriz em Papel Principal; Derek Klena e Sean Allan Krill concorrem ao prêmio de Melhor Ator em Papel em Destaque; e Kathryn Gallagher, Celia Rose Gooding e Lauren Patten estão competindo por Melhor Performance de uma Atriz em um Papel em Destaque. (Patten merece por sua performance em “You Oughta Know” sozinha.

Jagged Little Pill também tem uma chance de Melhor Figurino, Melhor Livro (escrito por Diablo Cody), Melhor Desenho de Iluminação, Melhor Desenho de Som, Melhor Direção e Melhor Orquestração. Em muitas dessas categorias, incluindo Melhor Musical, Melhor Livro e Melhor Design Cênico, é contra Tina – The Tina Turner Musical.

Produções como Freestyle Love Supreme, de Lin-Manuel Miranda, e American Utopia, de David Byrne, não convidaram eleitores para as encenações, por isso estão apenas abertas a prêmios especiais. Este último também vai para a HBO no final desta semana por meio de um filme dirigido por Spike Lee.
